What Matters:

A Client Story

A woman came to Fredericksburg Counseling Services in 2006. She was a plain appearing woman, somewhat of a physical handicap, and her facial affect was flat. On one of the early sessions, the counselor asked her to draw a picture of herself. She drew a stick figure as basic as you could draw. There was a round head, straight line for her body and straight lines for her arms and legs. She drew the eyes very basic and a straight line for the mouth. One word to describe the picture is “stark” and “dark”.

            Sad Face

After 44 sessions they talked about how far she has come and this early

drawing was referenced. Again, the counselor asked her to draw a picture
of herself. This drawing has her with red hair, a blue shirt and a pair of
slacks. The face had expression and a big smile.

They compared the two drawings and the
client commented how the first drawing was like a bare shell of a person. No expression, no concept of body, just a shell, but now… completely different.

On the new picture the client wrote the following,
without prompting mind you:
I am me.
I am free.
I can and will survive!

Had the number of sessions been limited by
insurance or capacity, this client would have been seen
for 15 sessions at best. Yet, at 44 sessions, the change
is beyond words. She has hope, has self esteem,
and she believes she now has a positive future.
That says it all.
